Google’s troubles escalate in India:

CCI orders probe into revenue sharing glitches; Even before this 2 cases have been registered

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has increased the problems of Google. The CCI has ordered an investigation on Google due to irregularities in the rules of revenue sharing related to news content. There were already two cases of investigation going on in India on Google. In such a situation, the third investigation will start due to violation of rules on Google.

What were the allegations in the last 2 cases?

CCI said that even before this, there were cases of discrepancies in revenue sharing of news content providers on Google. This time the CCI took action on the complaint of the News Broadcasters and Digital Association. The association includes national, regional private news, current affairs broadcasters and digital news media content providers.

All three cases will be investigated simultaneously

In January, the Digital News Publishers Association filed a complaint against Google. After this, the Indian Newspaper Society also complained to Google in a similar matter. The Director General (DG) of CCI has said to file an investigation report in all the three allegations against Google simultaneously.

Google was taking advantage by paying less money

The News Broadcasters and Digital Association alleged that Google (SERP) used to pressurize news content providers. Google was growing its search engine by paying less money in the name of keeping their news at the top of its search engine results page.

Google was also accused of developing ‘Google News’, ‘Google Discover’ and Google Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) with the help of news content providers.

Prioritizing ‘Top Stories’

In Google Discover, users could view news by clicking on the News tab or by searching for a topic. However, Google started placing selected news content above in its ‘Top Stories’ section. The stories Google was keeping at the top were paying them less money than their work. The same complaint has been made.

complaint against

The CCI filed the case against Alphabet Inc, Google LLC, Google India Pvt Ltd, Google Ireland Ltd and Google Asia Pacific Pte Ltd.
